Colorado Motorcycle Season Begins: Enjoy the Scenery, But Ride Safely

Spring marks the return of motorcycles to the unparalleled beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the many scenic roads of Colorado.

But enjoying the vistas, curved roads and towns doesn't come without its dangers, especially for motorcyclists. NBC 11 News reports that in 2010, 18 percent of traffic fatalities in Colorado were motorcycle accidents. Yet, only three percent of the registered vehicles in the state are motorcycles.

With motorcyclists being proportionally at more risk of fatal injury than other motorists, it is important for all motorcyclists to ride safely.

Safety First

No matter the amount of experience that a rider has, it is always important to review safety tips. Before riding this summer, remember:

  • Only ride a bike that properly fits
  • Always wear protective gear - including a helmet, safety goggles/glasses, long pants, jacket and close-toed shoes
  • Wear highly visible or reflective gear
  • Make sure the motorcycle is working properly - take the motorcycle to a reputable mechanic for a tune up and to make sure that all controls and lights are working
  • Review and obey all rules of the road
  • Take a training course - both beginners and experienced riders should take a course
  • All riders should have a motorcycle endorsement on their license

Because motorcycles offer riders less protection than drivers and passengers of other vehicles, it is important that motorcyclists ride defensively and do everything possible to stay safe while riding.

Even when a motorcycle rider is as safe as possible, follows all of the rules of the road and rides defensively, accidents can still happen. If an accident occurs, speak with an experienced personal injury attorney. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering, medical bills, and repairs.
